For parents and caregivers of children with autism or special educational needs (SEN), managing daily commutes can often feel overwhelming. Crowded stations, loud announcements, and busy environments can trigger stress and anxiety for children, making access to transit a challenge. Recognizing this, MTR Corporation is reshaping its travel experiences to better support these families.
One initiative gaining attention is the Journeying with Neighbours Roadshow, running through 11 stations across Hong Kong this October and November. The roadshows aim to foster awareness about how SEN individuals experience transit. Through interactive exhibits and activities, visitors can gain insights into the sensory obstacles these families face and learn how small changes — like understanding and patience — can make a difference.
MTR’s rollout of Sensory Kits, now available at all 99 heavy rail stations, is another pivotal step. These palm-sized, reusable sensory toys offer children tactile engagement to help manage sensory overload during their commute. Paired with the soon-to-launch MTR · Care App, featuring simulation games to help children familiarize themselves with train settings, the initiative is fast becoming a model of inclusive travel.
By blending infrastructure upgrades with public education, MTR is setting a new standard for accessible transit in Hong Kong, signaling an important shift towards empathy and inclusion for SEN families throughout Asia.
