Helping my autistic child transition to evening toothbrushing

My primary-school-aged autistic child struggles to stop an enjoyable activity and transition to the evening routine, especially toothbrushing. He often says he is not finished or wants to keep playing. We have tried advance warnings, timers, choices and explaining why brushing matters, but these do not work consistently. The difficulty seems to be ending the enjoyable day rather than brushing itself. What could help him transition with less distress and avoid a daily power struggle?
